A small community with great value
Etnedal became an independent municipality in 1894 after being split between the neighbouring municipalities Sør- and Nord-Aurdal. With only 1400 inhabitants Etnedal is a small community with strong social ties between people and we heartily welcome newcomers.
In addition to having one of Norways largest protected river – Etna, you will find that Etnedal has one of the richest and most varied scenic landscapes in the region. The lake in Steinsetbygda - Steinsetfjorden and the surrounding landscape offer rare biological diversity. As in other places in Valdres the oldfashioned mountain farming tradition is still strong. This makes Valdres and Etnedal special not only in Norway but in Europe as well.
The winter in Etnedal is cold and dry with lots of snow which makes it perfect for skiing and other winter activities. The summers are warm with temperatures up to 30 degrees Celcius and long, light summer nights. Etnedal has many lakes and rivers which are perfect for swimming.
